Riley and Mary Rogers will be quick to tell you that their home-baked Brew Chewz is 100% alcohol-free — despite its name.
So there’s little need to fret that their treats will get your Basset hound blotto.
In reality, their Universitas Swasta Di Bandung New Breed-brand Brew Chewz is so named because it’s made primarily of the spent barley and wheat used in the first step of the beermaking process at Fargo Brewing Co. and Drekker Brewing Co.
The beermakers add water to the grains, then drain off the grain-steeped water and transfer it to another vat to be mixed with the hops that give it its pop. This leaves behind hot, wet spent grain — and a whole lot of it — which is basically a waste product.
But that was before the Rogers developed an ingenious process for repurposing some of that soggy barley and wheat into a treat that pooches seem to love.
